Inauguration of Nine Solar Demonstration Projects in Uganda, Comoros, and Mali

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) recently hosted its 5th regional meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, with the support of the Government of Rwanda. This event, which took place on August 31, 2023, witnessed the participation of 36 countries, including ministers from 15 nations.
Inauguration of Nine Solar Demonstration Projects in Uganda, Comoros, and Mali
During the meeting, Shri R. K. Singh, President of the International Solar Alliance and Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, virtually inaugurated nine solar power demonstration projects spanning the Republic of Uganda, the Union of Comoros, and the Republic of Mali. This monumental initiative marks a significant step toward promoting solar energy adoption in these regions.
Solar Projects in Uganda
Through grants provided by the International Solar Alliance, Uganda has witnessed the solarization of a rural healthcare center and three primary schools. These projects boast a capacity of 8.5 kilo-watt peak and a 17.2 kilo-watt hour battery storage system, all achieved at a cost of USD 48,835. It’s important to note that these areas previously lacked access to energy, and this transformation is set to improve the lives of the communities significantly.
Solar Projects in Comoros
In Comoros, two rural healthcare centers in Banguoikouni and Ivembeni have been solarized. These projects are equipped with a capacity of 15 kilo-watt peak and a 33 kilo-watt hour battery storage system. The total cost for this endeavor was USD 49,999. Like Uganda, Comoros has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions for its underserved communities.
Solar Projects in Mali
The Republic of Mali has also embraced solar energy with the solarization of three rural healthcare centers in Koula, Sinzani, and Doumba. These projects boast a capacity of 13 kilo-watt peak and a 43 kilo-watt hour battery storage system, all completed at a total cost of USD 49,995. By doing so, Mali is making great strides in ensuring that even remote areas have access to reliable energy sources.
Dedication to Well-being
The Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister and ISA President underlined the commitment to undertake such projects that improve the well-being of the underserved. These projects serve as more than just energy providers; they are drivers of advancement and emblems of global cooperation. The International Solar Alliance remains dedicated to furnishing examples that can enhance the well-being of the underserved and serve as compelling models for replication in ISA Member Countries.
Promotion of Solar Energy
The International Solar Alliance, as a partner to the G20 Presidency of the Republic of India, advocates the promotion of solar energy for universal energy access and a sustainable energy transition. A crucial report titled “Roadmap of Solar Energy for Universal Energy Access,” released by ISA in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, highlights innovative policies and case studies that can revolutionize the deployment of solar mini-grids. These initiatives are particularly relevant for regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, where the energy access challenge is acute.
Addressing Energy Access Challenges
The report emphasizes electrification approaches centered around solar energy, with an emphasis on solar mini-grids and Decentralized Renewable Energy (DRE) solutions. These approaches can effectively address energy access challenges in various situations and promote locally developed innovative ideas and business models.
Affordable Financing and Technical Expertise
The ISA is dedicated to addressing the lack of affordable financing and technical expertise in ISA Member Countries, especially in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Member Countries. Through demonstration projects, such as the solarization of health centers, irrigation projects, and school buildings, the ISA aims to showcase the potential of solar technology applications in improving the lives of individuals across member nations.
A Brighter Future with Solar Energy
The vision of the International Solar Alliance is to create a future where clean and sustainable energy stands as a fundamental pillar of development. Solar energy is harnessed to uplift communities and preserve the environment. As we commemorate these groundbreaking projects, we persist in our joint efforts to tap into the solar potential and illuminate the path toward a more prosperous, sustainable, and just world for all.
Conclusion
The inauguration of nine solar power demonstration projects across Uganda, Comoros, and Mali signifies a significant leap toward sustainable energy solutions and universal energy access. These projects, driven by the International Solar Alliance, showcase the potential of solar energy to transform the lives of underserved communities and serve as models for replication in ISA Member Countries. As the world embraces solar energy, we move closer to a future where clean and sustainable energy drives development and prosperity for all.
