Biennial Elections to Be Held Across 10 States
Election Commission of India has announced that elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states will be held on June 18. The polls are being conducted to fill vacancies arising due to the retirement of several sitting members between June and July this year.
According to the official schedule released by the Election Commission, the election process will begin with the issuance of notification in the coming days, while counting of votes will also take place on June 18 itself after polling concludes.
Seats Falling Vacant in Multiple States
The Rajya Sabha elections will cover seats from states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
Reports indicate that four seats each will go to polls in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, while three seats each are scheduled in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Two seats in Jharkhand and one seat each in the northeastern states will also be contested.
Several Senior Leaders Set to Retire
The upcoming elections are significant because several prominent leaders are completing their Rajya Sabha terms. Leaders reportedly retiring include former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Union Minister George Kurian among others.
Political parties are expected to begin internal discussions and candidate selection processes soon, especially in states where contests could become competitive.
Election Process and Voting System
Rajya Sabha members are elected indirectly by elected Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) through the system of proportional representation using the single transferable vote. The elections are conducted under an open ballot system.
The Election Commission stated that the last date for filing nominations will be June 8, followed by scrutiny and withdrawal procedures as per the election schedule.
Political Significance of the Elections
The Rajya Sabha polls are expected to have political importance because the composition of the Upper House influences the passage of legislation and national policy decisions. Parties will aim to strengthen their numbers in the House through these elections.
Analysts believe states with closely balanced assembly numbers could witness strategic political negotiations and alliance discussions ahead of polling day.
By-Elections Also Announced
Apart from the biennial Rajya Sabha elections, the Election Commission has also announced by-elections for one Rajya Sabha seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
The Maharashtra seat reportedly became vacant after the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar following her election to the state assembly.
Conclusion
The announcement of Rajya Sabha elections for 24 seats marks the beginning of another important electoral exercise in Indian politics. With several senior leaders retiring and parties preparing fresh candidates, the June 18 polls are expected to play a key role in shaping the future composition of the Upper House of Parliament.
