The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the proposal for One Nation One Election will undertake a study visit starting from May 16 to hold consultations and gather inputs from various stakeholders regarding the proposed electoral reforms.
The committee has been constituted to study the constitutional, legal, and administrative aspects related to conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies across the country. During the visit, members of the committee are expected to interact with officials, legal experts, election authorities, policy specialists, and representatives from different institutions.
Officials stated that the study tour aims to understand practical challenges, possible benefits, and implementation mechanisms associated with the One Nation One Election proposal. The committee is also expected to examine international practices and review recommendations made by previous committees and commissions on electoral reforms.
The One Nation One Election concept has been widely discussed in recent years as a potential reform to reduce election expenditure, minimize repeated imposition of the Model Code of Conduct, and ensure smoother governance and policy implementation. Supporters of the proposal believe simultaneous elections could improve administrative efficiency and reduce financial burden on the government.
However, several political parties and constitutional experts have raised concerns regarding federal structure, constitutional amendments, logistical challenges, and regional political representation. The JPC is expected to take these views into consideration before preparing its recommendations.
The committee’s consultations and study visits are considered important steps in evaluating the feasibility of implementing simultaneous elections in India. The findings and recommendations of the panel may play a significant role in shaping future electoral reforms in the country.
